Slc26a10 is a member of the SLC26 gene family. While its function in insects has been explored, in mammals, it's considered a pseudogene [1,2]. In Nilaparvata lugens, NlSLC26A10 contains 11 transmembrane regions and a STAS domain, and plays an essential role in the reproduction of this insect. It affects ovarian development, egg production, hatchability, and the number of yeast-like symbionts in mature oocytes, possibly by decreasing juvenile hormone level and vitellogenin expression [1].
In a study on community-acquired pneumonia, SLC26A10 was identified as one of the main gene hubs through protein-protein-interaction-network analysis, with differences in its expression between patients who died and those who survived [3]. In nasal intestinal-type adenocarcinomas, a specific hemimethylated profile of SLC26A10 was found, though only CACNA1C was overexpressed both transcriptionally and immunohistochemically [4]. In Alzheimer's disease, SLC26A10 was associated with cortical thickness, with the identified genes and pathways potentially providing insights into brain atrophy mechanisms [5]. Also, in a GWAS on abdominal adiposity-related traits in Korean men, an SNP within SLC26A10 was associated with visceral adipose tissue-adjusted BMI, though the finding didn't reach significance in the replication study [6]. In acral melanoma, SLC26A10 was among the genes with significantly deleterious mutations potentially related to invasion and metastasis, identified through whole-exome sequencing [7]. In guinea pig pancreatic ducts, SLC26A10 was localized to the luminal membrane, suggesting it may be involved in pancreatic secretion by mediating electrogenic HCO3 -transport [8]. Additionally, in forensic science, some CpG markers in the promoter region of SLC26A10 were found to have menstrual-blood-specific methylation patterns, useful for body fluid identification [9].
In conclusion, Slc26a10 shows diverse associations across different biological systems and diseases. In insects, it's crucial for reproduction. In human diseases, its role ranges from potential implications in pneumonia, nasal adenocarcinomas, Alzheimer's disease, abdominal adiposity, acral melanoma, to its use in forensic body-fluid identification. Although it's a pseudogene in mammals, its functions in other species and its associations in human disease-related studies highlight its importance in understanding various biological processes and disease mechanisms.
