Tomm20l is a testis-enriched gene. Although its exact essential function, associated pathways, and overall biological importance have not been comprehensively detailed in the given references, gene-knockout (KO) mouse models can be a powerful tool to explore its role in biological processes [1].
In a study using the CRISPR/Cas9 system to generate KO mice for 12 testis-enriched genes including Tomm20l, mating tests revealed that Tomm20l, at least when individually ablated and not in combination with other potentially compensatory paralogous genes, is not essential for male fertility in vivo [1].
In conclusion, through the KO mouse model-based research, Tomm20l has been shown to be dispensable for male fertility. This finding contributes to understanding the genetic basis of male fertility and may prevent redundant efforts in generating KO mice for this gene [1].
