Ifi44, an interferon-alfa inducible protein, is associated with the immune response, especially in relation to viral and bacterial infections. In vitro studies have shown that Ifi44 inhibits HIV-1 replication by suppressing HIV-1 LTR promoter activity, affecting viral transcription [1]. In RA patients, it was identified as a hub gene and an immune evasion biomarker for SARS-CoV-2 and Staphylococcus aureus infections, negatively regulating the IFN signaling pathway to promote viral and bacterial proliferation [2]. In head and neck squamous cell carcinoma, ACSL4 upregulates Ifi44 expression, promoting cell proliferation and invasiveness [3].
In conclusion, Ifi44 is an interferon-inducible protein with a role in the immune response to infections and in certain disease conditions. Studies have shown its significance in HIV-1 latency, immune evasion in RA, and cancer cell behavior, highlighting its potential as a biomarker and therapeutic target in these disease areas.
