Ck137956, also named Tssa (testis-specific and spermiogenic arrest protein), is essential for male fertility. It is involved in the post-transcriptional regulation pathway during spermiogenesis. Spermiogenesis is a complex process where sperm is formed through chromatin condensation and cessation of transcription, and Ck137956/Tssa has a crucial role in this biological process [1].
Deletion of Tssa in mouse models (KO mouse model) led to male sterility and absence of sperm formation. Spermiogenesis arrested at the round spermatid stage, and numerous spermiogenic mRNAs were down-regulated. Also, the deletion disrupted the localization of Miwi to the chromatoid body. Tssa interacted with Miwi in repressed mRNPs and stabilized Miwi-interacting spermiogenesis-essential mRNAs [1].
In conclusion, Ck137956/Tssa is indispensable in male fertility. The gene knockout mouse models have revealed its critical role in post-transcriptional regulations during spermiogenesis, contributing to our understanding of male infertility mechanisms [1].
