Pdgfrl, or platelet-derived growth factor receptor-like, is a gene that has been associated with multiple biological processes and diseases. While it is regarded as a tumor suppressor gene in some contexts [3,4,6], its functions can vary depending on cell types. It may be involved in angiogenesis, steroid hormone production [5], and has potential roles in regulating chondrocyte proliferation and differentiation [3].
In endometriosis, Pdgfrl was identified as one of the five biomarkers through bioinformatics analysis. A nomogram based on these biomarkers showed a robust ability to predict the disease, and single-gene GSEA suggested its involvement in labyrinthine layer morphogenesis and transmembrane transport-related biological processes in endometriosis [1]. In Behçet disease, a genetic variant (rs17633132) on Pdgfrl was associated with the disease, and the expression of Pdgfrl in skin was different among individuals with different genotypes [2]. In chondrocytes, overexpression of Pdgfrl promoted cell proliferation but decreased the expression of chondrocyte differentiation marker genes [3]. In colorectal cancer, the expression of Pdgfrl was lower in cancer tissues compared to normal tissues, and the recombinant protein could inhibit the proliferation and invasion of CRC HCT-116 cells [4]. In hepatocellular carcinoma, regorafenib and radiotherapy combination treatment increased the expression of Pdgfrl, and Pdgfrl suppressed HCC cell proliferation and promoted apoptosis by inhibiting the STAT3 pathway activation [6]. In keloid, Pdgfrl was uniquely expressed, and a gene co-expression network was constructed to illustrate its function in skin [7]. In gastric cancer, Pdgfrl was part of a prognostic risk model based on apoptosis-related genes, which could help predict the prognosis of patients [8]. In exercise-induced immunosuppression, the abundance of Pdgfrl in urine increased with increased exercise intensity and could potentially be a non-invasive immune biomarker [9]. In Chinese Dagu hens, polymorphisms in Pdgfrl were associated with egg production traits [10].
In conclusion, Pdgfrl has diverse functions across different cell types and organisms. It plays important roles in various diseases such as endometriosis, Behçet disease, and multiple cancers. The identification of Pdgfrl as a biomarker or a gene associated with disease-related processes provides potential targets for diagnosis, prognosis prediction, and therapeutic intervention in these disease areas.
